In space application history, developing radiation hardened systems is a milestone to achieve, especially with high-level reliability and at low cost. To encounter the design difficulty of modern space and other critical aerospace applications a new microcontroller (MCU) is needed, it is developed by microchip and is now available on market. This microcontroller combines specified radiation performance with low-cost.
The ATmegaS64M1 CPU is designed with 8-bit AVR from microchip, use a development approach called COTS for radiation tolerance. ATmegaS64M1 is manufactured using our 0.35 μm CMOS and high-density nonvolatile memory technology. This device has been developed and manufactured according to the most stringent requirements of MIL-PRF-38535 International Standards and Aerospace AEQA0239 specification.It comes in the CQFP32 and TQFP32, both are high-reliable plastic and space-grade ceramic packages.
This device radiation tolerance meets the below performances:
● Fully immune from Single-Event Latch-up (SEL) up to 62 MeV.cm²/mg
● No Single-Event Functional Interrupts (SEFI), which secure memory integrity.
● Accumulated Total Ionizing Dose (TID) between 20 to 50 K-rad (Si)
● Single Event Upset (SEU) characterization of all functional blocks
The ATmegaS64M1 features three differential amplified channels with programmable 5, 10, 20, and 40 gain stage. The ATmega64M1 device comes along with its full development toolchain including development kits and code configurator. These can be used to begin development of hardware, firmware, and software. When the prototype is ready for the final phase or the final stage, it is ready for production. This Commercial off-the-shelf device can be replaced by its 32-lead pinout compatible. It reduces risk and time in the development process and also leads to significant cost saving in the process of development.
The ATmegaS64M1 comes with the low voltage range of operation 3.0 V to 3.6 V and with the high operating temperature range of -55 °C to +125 °C. The core speed up to 8MHz. ATmegaS64M1 is the first COTS with radiation tolerant MCU, that combine a CAN, LIN, DAC and motor control feature. This feature makes it more compatible with the variety of subsystems like remote terminal controllers and data handling functions of satellites, constellations, launchers or critical avionics applications.
